Despite growing up with my father’s diving stories−or maybe because of them−I never considered diving.
My father started diving in the 60’s and back then that included building your own equipment from scratch and driving 600 km with two tanks to do two dives in the south of France over the weekend.
It sounded all very adventurous and a little bit crazy. As my father had stopped before I was born neither he nor I had any idea how easy it now is to go diving anywhere.
When I told a fellow backpacker in Egypt in 2008 I was going to Dahab he asked me if I’m going there to dive. As I replied “No.” he said “You should” and I did. A week later I took my first breath under water at Sunsplash Divers in Dahab.
That felt very natural and normal but what really amazed me was looking up and seeing fish swimming above me!!
In 2010 during my 13 month trip I took my CMAS 2★ course in Kaş, Turkey. The fact that I didn’t do a PADI course was not a conscious decision but due to chance.
I kept diving on that trip which led me to some not so famous diving destinations like Iran and Bangladesh.
In the fall of 2013 I returned to Kaş to take my CMAS 3★ and work for almost 3 month. That winter I flew to the Philippines to do my IDC with Kenneth Svennerlind at Asia Divers in Puerto Galera and became a PADI Instructor in January 2015.
I love diving and I’m just very happy being under water. I don’t need great things to see, as long as my head is below water…
